A la carte cable TV
I'd have to say I'm pretty against a la carte cable service. A la carte is where you pick and choose only the channels you want to watch and are willing to pay for and that's all you get. Some might think that this is a great idea but I feel that if people have the choice in this case, there will be fewer choices as far as channels go. It's a safe bet that a vast majority of people would choose ESPN as one of their channels. But how many of them would want to pay for ESPN 2 or ESPNews. The additional channels that the major players offer might not be able to survive if an a la carte option is chosen. Cable and satellite providers are better able to negotiate with the networks on pricing. Would those people that chose ESPN be willing to pay for a bigger increase in cost that ESPN imposes almost every year? ESPN is one the most expensive channels carried on almost every cable system. This doesn't include the HBOs or Showtimes as you pay extra for those anyway. While a la carte sounds like a good idea, I think in the long run, it will hurt cable.
